Description: <p>This layer shows the exterior boundary of the Flathead Reservation in northwestern Montana as a single polygon. DNRC exported it from the Montana State Library's statewide reservation boundaries so it can be used as a reference layer in DNRC web maps and applications. DNRC does not maintain or edit the boundary.</p><p>Background: The Flathead Reservation is the home of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT), made up of the Bitterroot Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai tribes. The reservation was established by the Hellgate Treaty of 1855.</p><p>Sources: The boundary comes from the Montana State Library's Tribal Nations in Montana dataset, part of the Montana Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) Administrative Boundaries framework. MSL first digitized the reservation boundaries from USGS 1:250,000-scale maps. Where a boundary follows Public Land Survey System (PLSS) lines, MSL copied it from the Bureau of Land Management's Geographic Coordinate Database (GCDB). Elsewhere, MSL digitized it on screen from USGS 1:24,000-scale Digital Raster Graphics (topographic maps). In 2021 MSL reviewed the boundaries against the U.S. Census Bureau's reservation boundaries, added Census Bureau attribute fields and a unique ID, and aligned the boundaries to the Montana PLSS data (CadNSDI). The Census Bureau fields in this layer reflect the Census data MSL used. For current boundaries, use the Montana State Library's data. For official reservation boundaries, contact the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes or the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The SHAPE__Area field is calculated in the layer's map projection and is about twice the true area. Use the Census Bureau ALAND and AWATER fields for land and water area.</p>
